On July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 1863, a small town in Pennsylvania would witness the most destructive battle in the Civil War. That town was Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1863, Confederate General, Robert E. Lee decided to take the war to the Union territory. His main objective for invading the North was to relieve Vicksburg, Mississippi from destruction, gain recognition from the British government, and destroy as many Union military posts as he could in the North. But most importantly, Lee wanted the Northern people to give up the will to fight and force President Lincoln to sue for peace with the Confederacy. President Lincoln and Union General George Meade were determined to stop General Lee at Gettysburg.
